Hi all,
I've just built a PC and I'm having a problem with no display on startup. If I shut the PC down for a few hours and come back to start it up, there's no VGA display. I have to disconnect the PSU power and then with the monitor turned on, turn on the PC. When I turn on the PC, the Num and Caps Lock LED's on the keyboard flash, and on successful display, they flash a second time just before the appearance of the MoBo splash screen. Sometimes I have to retry because this restart procedure fails about 1 out of 4 times. With exception of monitor, all hardware is new: MSI 945P Neo5-F MoBo Intel E7200 2.53Ghz Core 2 Duo CPU Asus EN9600GSO Magic 512mb 128-bit Video Card 2x2G Kingston ValueRam KVR667D2N5K/4G WD500AAKS 500Gig SATAII HDD LG GH22NS30 SATA DVD/RW Generic case, 430W PSU, 3x80mm + 1x120mm fans. Samsumg 763MB CRT monitor Vista Ultimate SP1 OS Upon successful startup, the Asus Smartdoctor reports the video card is OK. Also, I tested it in another PC, worked fine. Upon suggestion of friend, I tried a different PSU in this PC. I swapped in a 500W unit of the same brand, made no difference. However, given that the PSU's I'm using are of the same generic make and dubious quality, I'm looking to try a better quality one. Aside from the possibility of the PSU being the problem, does anyone have any suggestions on this? Thanks. |

Normally if it was a problem with the video card, the computer would give out a beep code. On another point, is that video card any good? I am planning on buying the same one for my computer I have just built. |

Hi Rogue,
The monitor is good, tested on another PC. Just some other observations on this problem... After the PC has sat turned off for several hours, it's difficult to successfully boot up and get a display. If I have the monitor turned on and in standby mode, display will fail when I start the PC. I have to turn on the monitor with its front-panel power button and then immediately switch on the PC while the monitor is starting up. Also of note, upon failed boot/display, the optical mouse is not lit. Another quirky thing is that after successful boot and display, when I shut it down, the Num Lock LED on the keyboard stays lit. Rogue, to answer your question about the Asus EN9600GSO Magic 512, I'm no expert in these matters, just sort of learning as I go. I have yet to put this card to its intended use in connecting to a bigscreen TV. I don't find it to be overly loud, but from the minimal use I've had from it I can't really assess its performance yet. Given that my use will be for movies instead of gaming, I figured it would be suitable. Relative to its specifications, I felt it was well-priced for a 512 mb card. Thanks for your reply. |
