It is ironic that you posted in the muBlinder User Guide topic, when the issue you face is clearly addressed in the guide. You have not read the guide carefully enough. Read the third paragraph of the first post in this topic.

You do not need to use WinRar to "open" a .bln file. All blinder files must be placed in your \data\blinders folder, as explained in the guide. I'm sorry but my Italian is not good enough to explain this to you in your own language.

Hey guys,

I wish that my first post here was not a problem but an answer for someone but its not unsure.gif .

I have has to do a fresh re-install of XP. It has been a long time between drinks when doing all this MB stuff. I have read as much as i can to find out this particular problem and there is no step through for it.

THE PROBLEM: when i use the update in MB. it opens up the browser no probs, it checks for updates finds 2 updates. now one is:

Update for Windows XP (KB898461)
477 KB , less than 1 minute
This update installs a permanent copy of Package Installer for Windows to enable software updates to have a significantly smaller download size. The Package Installer facilitates the install of software updates for Microsoft Windows operating systems and other Microsoft products. After you install this update, you may have to restart your system.

2nd

Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130)
1.1 MB , less than 1 minute
The Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool enables you to verify that your copy of Microsoft Windows is genuine. The tool validates your Windows installation by checking Windows Product Identification and Product Activation status.

MB says do not install WGA Validation tool correct? I cannot un check these two installs. there are no tick boxes to un tick. Basically its forcing me to install them.

What should or could i do???

NOTE: MB details.

Validation

Detecting DLL: Passed!
DLL Version: Passed! (1.7.0059.1)
DLL Status: Passed! (Replacement DLL)

You are ready to download updates!

Detecting Notification: Not Found

(Seems like you do not have Windows Genuine Advantage NOTIFICATION installed. THAT IS GOOD! Make sure you do NOT install this update. If you see it in MS Update then uncheck it and click -Dont Show This Update Again-. The Notification update is NOT the same as Validation and has nothing to do with getting updates or not.)

I don't know what you have been reading, but where does it say that? The opposite is true! muBlinder works with WGA Validation. You should have the latest version of the Validation tool installed, which means that you must ALWAYS accept any offer of the tool and then use muBlinder to blind it.

It seems that there is some disagreement between muBlinder and Microsoft over whether you have v1.7.0059.1 of the tool installed. muBlinder reports that it has blinded it, but Microsoft is not satisfied that it has been installed (properly). To satisfy Microsoft you must download the Validation tool it is offering you. Note that Microsoft does not detect the blinding by muBlinder. The blinding does not affect the installation of the tool.

It is the Notification tool that you do not need. This is explained in the first post of this topic. You need the Validation tool, but you do not need the Notification tool. Having said that, muBlinder can easily deal with the Notification tool if you do install it.

Did you click on the Express button to view the updates? Doing so means that must accept the whole set of available "critical" updates, or none at all. you must use the Custom button. Microsoft as good as tells you that by marking the Express button as "recommended". When you view updates using the Custom button you should be able to pick and choose.

The advice is to un-check the Notification tool when/if it is offered, but it is not a disaster to accept it.

I trust this has clarified the situation for you. If not, please post again.

As you can see, if you look carefully at the screenshot you provided, you have not reached the list of available updates from which you can choose. This screen appears before you get to that position, to alert you to the fact that you cannot use Microsoft Update until you have installed the 2 essential files it offers. Read the first sentence on the screenshot. When you have installed these 2 files, use muBlinder to handle the Validation tool, then return to the Update site and you will be presented with the list of available updates from which you can choose. One of these updates will probably be the Notification tool. The best option is to un-check this 'update'.

Not quite. I'm not sure I can make this any clearer than I did in my previous reply, but here goes.

You MUST ACCEPT the WGA Validation tool whenever it is offered. If you don't then Microsoft will not allow you to view the available updates and muBlinder cannot help you.

You NEED NOT ACCEPT the WGA Notification tool. It is of no use to you, but, if you do install it, muBlinder can easily deal with it.

I have a question.

From this image on Page 1:

Posted Image

If my PC has it...that's good news? :P

This is my problem.
Some say it's spam/spyware.
True?

Posted Image

Each time I boot my PC...my desktop will be cleaned out.
Had to retrieve it each time at C:Document/All user/Desktop :)

So some people call it spam/spyware? I've heard it called a lot worse than that! The fact is that it comes from Microsoft as part of their Windows Genuine Advantage Program. There are two parts to WGA, Validation and Notification. The blue star is part of Notification. Deal with it on the Notification screen in muBlinder. This will disable it.

The Validation tool, which is an ActiveX control, MUST be installed on your computer. Microsoft checks whether it has been installed if you attempt to visit the Update site. Once it has been installed, muBlinder can deal with it on the Validation screen.

The steps you have to follow are described in the first post of this topic. Have you downloaded and run muBlinder yet?

You know you saved them correctly? How do you know? Have you carried out a search on your hard drive to locate them? If not, enter *.bln in the search box to see if they have been correctly saved to the /data/blinders folder, located in the folder from which your run muBlinder.exe.

Full details for using the WMP11 blinder, with illustrations, are provided in the second post of this topic.

Do you seriously expect me to believe that you have read the User Guide before making your post? MuBlinder cannot help you to install SP2. Towards the end of the first section, the Guide states "If you need Service Pack 2 then read this guide." We have a separate guide for SP2.

To help you even more, download the Japanese version from this page.
